While I was making this film, it was difficult to sleep at night. I felt like I was witnessing a miracle.
While Pete Docherty and Amy Whinehouse were shelling out £1000’s to get medical help at The Priory, hundreds of heroin addicts in Southern Russia were coming off drugs by committing their lives to Jesus Christ.
I’d just won an RTS Gold for BBC 2 and thought I could easily pitch this as my next project but when the head of International Current Affairs saw early footage he said ‘I can’t commission this, nobody will believe it.’
The hardest bit to film was the nightly outreach - it’s the only time in my career that a cameraman has been too afraid to go into a situation. It was like walking onto the set of a zombie movie.
We cut this 15 minute version so EXODUS could use it to convince desperate parents to let their sons and daughters at least give it a try.
